There's a quote I love that goes "With fire we test the gold, and with gold we test the servants." While there seems to be a fairly straight interpretation of that quote as relating to the shiny things of this world, which can mesmerize but burn - or eventually, if we have some kind of internal properties like gold, then maybe we can come out of that fire, in a more 'purified' state. Well, this song is a slightly less obvious extrapolation. I was going through some heart 'tests' and reflected how it really did feel like a fire. And, that being the case, I guess this song was my plea tthat I might come out of the fire purified, like gold - understanding myself and the world a little better - rather than scolded or even burnt, ie. just sad and confused; jaded and bitter. It also does invoke the more explicit meaning of the quote as I finally realised that I had to call upon some detachment, and remember that even the other people in our lives are 'of the world' too. and theres always plenty of love left...

Leave it to me
To mess it all up again
It turns out I needed a test
And wouldn't you know
I couldn't let go
I had to go in for the rest

Will I be gold? Or will I be scolded?

Leave it to me
To choose the fire
Warm water is just not enough
To make me believe
In my purity
My edges are still so rough

Oh! God!
Will I be gold? Or will I be scolded?

My habits have come
A haunting me
I'm eating again mindlessly
And watching again
Brainless Telly
And avoiding the telephone
My belly is bulgeing and full
But I still want more

Leave it to me to live optimistically
I still have plenty of love left
And didn't you know
There's hope for us all
Purified by the fire we are blessed

Oh! God!
May I be gold? And in your love folded..?

This is my first album and it's really pretty good. Before recording it with a killer band I did maaany years of solo gigging, collaborations with electronika, house and dub djs, writing children's music, singing lead in a grunge punk all-girl band, taking the bass line in 4 part a capella harmonies, making medieval music at school and singing along to Kate Bush and David Bowie records in the dark ... more
